'Arty Angels' by Elisa Ablett

Hi everyone,

Oh my goodness, December already! this year has flown by....

Instead of getting all Christmasy at Scrap Matrix for our Challenge, Vicki went with a veritable rainbow of colours which is just AMAZING!

This is a fabulous challenge as it gives us all a chance to learn a bit more about the colour wheel if we are rusty or to use the entire Rainbow and I LOVE COLOUR.

Here is the link to the challenge album in the Scrap Matrix Shares facebook group.

After a bit of research I wanted to show you what you can do with a colour scheme that sits next to each other on the colour wheel, it's called an Analogous Colour Scheme.

Analogous Colours from the Colour Wheel - Analogous colour schemes use colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel. They usually match well and create serene and comfortable designs. Analogous colour schemes are often found in nature and are harmonious and pleasing to the eye.

I picked a 'cool' colour Analogous scheme of Blues, Turquoise and Greens and I was inspired by the water colour colour wheel in the bottom left hand corner of the challenge graphic.

Let's take a look at the close ups for the finer details :-

To colour my Angels, I sprayed a small amount of each of the colours onto my craft messy mat and used a small paint brush to colour my Angels. I also added more water where needed to create a more pastel version of the colours.

Add some coordinated accents like wings, tags, tabs, quotes and distressed sewing!

To create some texture in the background, I added some modelling paste through a stencil, and then used the sprays over the top and then tipped my page so the sprays would run down over the stencilled back ground.

Add some extra hand drawn circles over the top of your wheels that you have created and some inking through stencils and splatters to tie the layout together.

That's it from me today, thank you for stopping by the blog, i hope i have inspired you to take on the Colour Wheel challenge and also an Analogous Colour Scheme!

Hugs xx

Scrap Matrix December challenge - The Colour Wheel with Helen

Welcome back to the Scrap Matrix challenge this month
where we have a gorgeous mood board to inspire you.

I've heard a rumour that Christmas is coming, but getting  stuck into a challenge is a sure fire way to de-stress.  I promise!

I decided to challenge myself by using a colour wheel which I bought recently from Scrap Matrix.  I tend to gravitate to the same colours all the time; often using a monochromatic theme.   It gets a bit boring, even for me, so it's time to experiment!

As I've never studied art at any level, all these combinations are new to me and I choose a Triad (Contrast) theme, with three colours equally spaced on the wheel.
Green-Blue, Violet-Red and Orange-Yellow.

The eye on the mood board also inspired me and I used a piece of art work, created by Hope Wallace, a truly talented artist in our family.  Thank you Hope.

But, back to the beginning.  I almost always use clear Gesso on my page before I begin, to seal the Card Stock so I can use Mixed media. It seals the background and makes it easier to sop up a any little mistakes.

I apply it fairly thickly, then smooth it out, often with my hands.  It looks white here, but dries clear.

Next, I added the quote, using a wide bodied printer.

Using a new stencil, I applied a thick layer of texture paste and allowed it to dry overnight. It's Oh so tempting to rush this part, but I've learnt my lesson and leave it well alone these days.

These Scribble Sticks are new to me and I love the creamy texture they add on top of texture paste.  I scribbled directly onto the texture and then added water with a soft brush.

These are the three colours I used,Fuschia, Peacock and Cheddar.  The Cheddar appears orangey in the stick, but it's yellow when scribbled onto the project.

By scribbling the sticks onto a craft mat and adding water, I made liquid colour, which I just flicked around with a brush.
I was trying to simulate a colour wheel; what do you think?

Finally, I added some strips of colour on two of the edges with some punched borders, filled in with card stock.

I hope you find time to play along, just add your entry to the Scrap Matrix Shares page in the corresponding folder and don't forget to let us know what Scrap Matrix products you used and what inspired you.  You could be in the running for a  gift voucher and perhaps a Guest Design Team spot down the track.

Art Journal Page - the colour wheel ... by Lynn

Heeellllloooo everyone,

Lynn here today to share with you the art journal page that I have created for this months challenge.

THE COLOUR WHEEL - what an awesome moodboard - so many options.

I was instantly attracted to the eye and wanted to do something around that image.

No automatic alt text available.

Here is my journal page:

For the background I have used the colours as they are on the colour wheel - this is the most pleasing to the eye.

I have used scribble sticks - but I didnt place them directly onto the paper - I have used a very wet brush and wiped the ink from the scribble sticks onto my mat giving me more of a water colour effect.

I have gone over each colour a couple of times to get the density that I liked.  It is important that the colours are dry before adding another colour or you just might make mud!

I have hand-drawn an eye on a seperate piece of paper and then cut it out and stuck it down onto my journal page. Definately at the ugly stage here without lashes!!!! (and I increased the blue of the eye so that it goes to the bottom of the eye)

Using the scribble sticks again I have added some more colour around the eye and let it drip down.

To fit in with the saying I have also added some tears (which is from a raindrop stamp) and some stars on the other side using texture paste and a dusty attic star stencil.

The eyelashes were made with a combination of a water colour pencil and a black paint pen.

The words were printed onto a transparency and then glued onto the page - I find this better than my hand writing!!!

I will link the products used below so you can easily find them in the Scrap Matrix Store.

I hope that you find some time to join in this month - it is easy peasy - just take a photo of your project and upload it into the December Album in the Scrap Matrix Shares page.

Tam just had to go with ALL of the colours!!

Hi there Scrap Matrix lovelies.

My turn (Tam) to share my creation for the current 'Colour Wheel Challenge'.
What a challenge!!
As soon as I saw it, I did a major happy dance.....totally up my alley!

I ADORE COLOUR!

Of course, I just HAD to go with some sort of rainbow layout.

When I think of colour, and what Inspires me, I immediately think of my babies.

They bring ALL of the colours into my life.

So I began by adding white gesso to white cardstock.

I then grabbed my favourite sprays....Dylusions Ink Sprays.  I just love their vibrancy.

So I began by adding some colour to the background.
Instead of spraying them on (too stressful - they go everywhere!), I opened them and applied with a paintbrush.

I added water and then let it run down the page a little.  This gives a gorgeous watercolour finish to the bold ink.

A couple of tips.....

WAIT for each colour to dry before adding the next colour - this will give you that distinct rainbow effect. Otherwise you run the risk of them blending and changing colour - I want colour, not mud!

My second tip is to copy the rainbow pattern ROYGBIV - it's fine to leave out a colour but going in that order is pleasant to the eye - that gorgeous natural wonder the rainbow does the work of contrasting/complementing the colours for you.  Don't mess with what is already perfect.

Once completely dry, I added a few flicks of the colour too.

I used the following colours:
Red - Dylusions Ink Spray - Postbox Red
Orange - can you believe I didn't have an orange Ink Spray, so I grabbed my Prima Watercolours in 'Tropical' and used the orange from that. You really can't tell the difference, so if  you don't have Dylusions Ink Sprays, using watercolour instead will totally work!
Yellow - Dylusions Ink Spray - Lemon Zest
Green - Dylusions Ink Spray - Vibrant Turquoise
Blue - Dylusions Ink Spray - Calypso Teal
Purple - Dylusions Ink Spray - Crushed Grape

That's the background done. So EASY!

Recently I had a bit of a spending spree on the new amazing Carabelle Stamps.

I couldn't go past this gorgeous flower stamp....

I stamped some onto white cardstock using an archival ink.

I wanted to add colour, so needed the ink to stay put and not run.

I then grabbed the Prima Watercolours in Tropical again and applied colour.

I focused the stronger colour on the centre of the flowers and let it fade off on the outer parts.

They look pretty average like this, but once cut out they are gorgeous!!

SEE!!

Anyway, back to the layout....

We took this photo recently.....yup a selfie, and I knew immediately I wanted to print it in both black and white and colour.  I just loved the contrast, and decided to print two more black and whites and create a multi photo layout.  Yes they are all the same photo - but you could easily use 4 photos in a series for this too.

As soon as I looked at the series, my title just came to me.....you colour my world!

I used the Tim Holtz Ideaology stamps to add the word 'colour'.

I then added in some Tim Holtz Ideaology small talk stickers.....

I added some of the paint splatters from the 7Dots Hazy Days Stamps in black ink.  LOVE this stamp so much.

I used both the large splatter and the fine splatter.

I ensured some were overlapping and some were hanging off the page.

I just love how those flowers look..... I made sure the colours matched the background.

I added in some 7Dots Word Stickers and also a few of the Mambi Chips - to the centre of the flowers.  They just completely finished it off!

The final step.....JOURNAL!!!

Doesn't have to be a lot, but ADD it!

I love how this turned out!!

I'd love you to give it a go!
